------------------------------------------------------------------------ COLLOQUIUM OF THE LABORATORY FOR COMPUTER DESIGN OF MATERIALS Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics CSI 898-Sec 001 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ PROCESSING AND APPLICATION OF POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITE MATERIALS Dr. Lisa C. Veitch The Institute for Defense Analyses, Alexandria, VA 22311 Polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials have been used in commercial and military systems since the 1940s. Over the years, composite materials have found their way into a variety of markets including boats, general aviation, vehicles, infrastructure and recreational equipment. Usage of these materials, however, has been limited in the commercial and military aviation industry because of high costs to manufacture composite parts, the lack of computer models that can predict failures in composites and limited non-destructive inspection and repair techniques. This presentation will explain the basic properties of PMCs and how these composite materials are produced. Both traditional and the latest state-of-the-art composite processes will be discussed as well as current uses of PMCs. Finally, reasons why composites are not used more extensively in the aircraft industry and what is needed to overcome shortfalls related to manufacturing and modeling composite properties will be presented. Monday , February 23 1998 4:30 pm Room 206, Science & Tech. I Refreshments will be served. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (http://www.csi.gmu.edu/lcdm/seminar/schedule.html)
