  Data Science Meets Scientific Data: It Is Not Always Going to be Pretty

Abstract: As Big Data and Data Science technologies are used to exploit
scientific and technical data collections, some challenging problems will be
encountered. In this talk, I identify some of these problems, discuss their
origin within the practice of science, and try to shed some light on what
scientific discovery means in today's environment. I draw on examples from
several areas of science and technology to illustrate my points.
