-------------------------------------------------------------------- SEMINAR OF THE DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS GROUP Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics -------------------------------------------------------------------- Band Structure and Transport in Skutterudites David J. Singh Naval Research Laboratory Skutterudites, although known for several decades, have remained somewhat obscure. Recently, they have become of interest for potential thermoelectric applications. Our first principles studies have shown that these materials have novel properties indeed. In particular, the family includes zero gap semiconductors, and in some cases, unusual linear band dispersions. These unusual dispersions cause the transport properties to vary with carrier concentration in non-conventional ways. Prospects for thermoelectric applications will be discussed.
