          Cooperation in Materials Theory: The Evolution of the 
                  Materials Theory Center at NIST

         Lyle H. Schwartz, President, Associated Universities, Inc., 
   formerly Director, Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory, NIST

In this informal discussion, I will review briefly the scope of materials
research at NIST and its intended applications. I will then spend some time
discussing various efforts at collaborative research which preceded our
efforts in theory to set the stage for the initiation of the theory center.
My remarks will close with a discussion about the center itself, with
emphasis on philosophy and organization and only passing mention of specific
technical activity.
