------------------------------------------------------------------------ COLLOQUIUM OF THE LABORATORY FOR COMPUTER DESIGN OF MATERIALS Institute for Computational Sciences and Informatics CSI 898-Sec 001 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONFINED PHOTONS IN SEMICONDUCTOR MICROCAVITIES T. L. Reinecke Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC Theoretical results for the confined photon modes in low dimensional systems will be given and compared with recent experimental results on microcavities formed by lithographic techniques. Numerical techniques for calculating such modes will be sketched and their relation to analogous techniques for the electronic properties of nanostructures will be noted. Detailed comparison of experiment and calculations for the modes of single cavities, which behave like "photonic atoms" will be given. In addition, it will be shown that coupled pairs cavities behave like photonic molecules and that chains of such cavities constitute photonic solids. Monday, March 2 1998 4:30 pm Room 206, Science & Tech. I Refreshments will be served. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (http://www.csi.gmu.edu/lcdm/seminar/schedule.html)
