NYDEN BUILDING AND FIRE RESEARCH LABORATORY NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY GAITHERSBURG, MD 20899 THE SPECTRAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE THERMAL ENERGY RADIATED IN A FIRE IS DETERMINED BY THE TEMPERATURE OF THE SOURCE (EMISSION) AND THE COMPOSITION OF THE MEDIUM IT TRAVERSES (TRANSMISSION). IN PRINCIPLE, THE CONDITIONS IN ANY ELEMENT OF THE REACTING VOLUME CAN BE DETERMINED FROM ANALYSES OF THE CORRESPONDING INFRARED EMISSION AND TRANSMISSION SPECTRA. IN PRINCIPLE, THESE LOCAL SPECTRA CAN BE RECONSTRUCTED FROM LINE-OF-SIGHT MEASUREMENTS USING STANDARD TOMOGRAPHIC ALGORITHMS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS TALK IS TO OUTLINE PLANS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A FTIR TOMOGRAPHIC SPECTROMETER WITH THE CAPABILITY TO MEASURE THE EMISSION AND TRANSMISSION OF INFRARED RADIATION IN FIRES AS FUNCTIONS OF BOTH TIME AND SPACE.
