Aerogels are high porosity, high surface area materials with structure on the 1-100 nm scale. Our group has prepared, for the first time, Ru-Ti oxide aerogels. In the bulk, Ru-Ti oxides have high electronic conductivity due to interconnected metallic RuO2. In order to understand the aerogels' electrical behavior as a function of processing conditions, we have studied the structure of the Ru and Ti oxide phases independently using Contrast Matching SANS. The strengths and weaknesses of this technique will be discussed. The results indicate that, despite their crystallographic similarities, the RuO2 and TiO2 components of the aerogels are structurally distinct.
