Lyver, IV NASA Headquarters, Office of Safety and Mission Assurance For centuries man has looked into the sky and wondered if life existed on the red planet, Mars. A decade ago, NASA was given the mission to continue to explore Mars to search for the building blocks of life. In 2003, NASA launched the twin probes, Spirit and Opportunity, to continue the geologic exploration of the surface of Mars.
