-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COLLOQUIUM OF THE COMPUTATIONAL MATERIALS SCIENCE CENTER College of Science (CDS Department CSI 898-Sec 001) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIXING BY THINKING: The power of dimensional analysis E. N. Economou Physics Department, University of Crete, Greece The atomic idea in combination with the minimization of (free) energy and the three basic principles of Quantum Mechanics imply that matter is stabilized by the equality of the squeezing pressure of the potential energy and the expanding pressure of the kinetic energy. From atoms to asteroids the former is characterized by the electronic charge, e , while the latter depends mainly on h and m (the electronic mass). Thus, properties of matter depend on h, e, and m and possibly on other physical constants or parameters. If just a little imagination and thinking are applied, in combination with dimensional analysis, a lot of results pop up almost out of nothing. April 9, 4:30 pm Room 301, Research I, Fairfax Campus Refreshments will be served at 4:15 PM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Find the schedule at http://www.cmasc.gmu.edu/seminar/schedule.html --------------------------------------------------------------------
